Area info

Getaria is situated on the coast of Guipúzcoa, about 30 kilometers west of Saint Sebastian.

While it is best known as a quaint fishing village, such illustrious international figures like Juan Sebastián Elcano and Cristóbal Balenciaga hailed from the area.

In the Middle Ages, Getaria's fisherman were renowned for their skill with a hand-thrown harpoon for whale-hunting, a practice that has since faded here. A leisurely stroll around the town reveals beautiful medieval cottages and the Hermitage of San Antón. Another star attraction is the church of San Salvador from the 15th century in the Gothic style.

Getaria is also famous for its Txakoli, a dry but slightly sparkling white wine that is typically slightly greenish in color and served often as an aperitif. For many of the delicious dishes of the Basque region, the Txakoli is the perfect accompaniment.

How to get there

From Barcelona:

If you are coming from the A-15 from Pamplona to San Sebastian , after Lasarte take the A-8 direction Zarautz-Bilbao. After approximately 12 kilometers , take the exit nº11 Zarautz-Getaria. You have to cross the village of Zarautz always straight direction Getaria on the N-634. Continue on the N-634 across the village of Getaria direction Zumaia. About 1 kilometer after Getaria take a left towards “Barrio Azkizu-San Prudencio” on the GI-3392. Keep on the GI-3392 straight until you see the sign “km. 1” and turn left. Follow this little road approximately 500m. and you will see our hotel on your left.

From Madrid:

If you are coming from the motorway A-8 to San Sebastian , take the exit of Zumaia and continue on the N-634. Carry on the N-634 around 3,5 kilometers . 1 km . before reaching Getaria turn right direction “Barrio Azkizu-San Prudencio”. You are now on the GI-3392. Keep on the GI-3392 straight until you see the sign “km. 1” and turn left. Follow this little road approximately 500m. and you will see our hotel on your left.

From France :

After crossing the border form France , take the motorway A-8 direction San Sebastian / Bilbao . Approximately 12 km after San Sebastian , take the exit nº 11 Zarautz-Getaria. You have to cross the village of Zarautz always straight direction Getaria on the N-634. Carry on the N-634, cross the village of Getaria direction Zumaia.
